Sinner (Krushnalal Shridharani)

Millions of galaxies swirl
millions of luminous spheres
millions of luminous spheres
million vernacular stars
crimson red suns
such a cosmos was drawn
and the mystery of infinity forged!

Sparkles like a house-lamp
our own sun
our own sun
in the sky-gallery’s corner
in one remote corner:
but its family is so great
Jupiter-Saturn within the group of eight!

Eight orbits of eight planets1
amongst them one circle
amongst them one circle
Earth’s orbit fifth crosses
the paths of so many moonlets.
Spread on Earth are five continents
each has a separate headquarter!

Within the five Asia is largest
within it Hindustan
within it Hindustan
within Hindustan one province of Mumbai2
a centre of baniya community3
in the province the garden Gujarati
less liquor, more toddy!

Within Gujarat near Kutch
stretches Kathiawad4
stretches Kathiawad.
In one corner within it
range of Shretrunjay hills.
Hiding there was a hamlet
its ballad I want to narrate!

The hills of Shretrunjay sway
in their midst Gambhu village
in their midst Gambhu village
there points everyone
to devout Kala’s neem5tree stump.
In all the big talk
salty will taste my small song!

The waters of River Shetrunji keep flowing
and erode Gambhu’s edges
and erode Gambhu’s edges.
At Rama’s temple at Gambhu’s outskirts
the evening worship takes place.
In the courtyard fruiting is the neem
the fruit looms are in full swing!

One day’s story got left out –
only God’s will is done
only God’s will is done.
Same is the killer and the rescuer
nothing without Him can transpire.
The tongue goes limp describing it
blood in the heart flows fast!

The day was bright and the afternoon
was burning hot
was burning hot.
The time was right in the torrid heat
if one wanted to catch a thief.
Sitting at the gate of the temple
were Lord’s devotees in a circle!

Nine were the devotees and in the center
a bava6 read the scriptures
a bava read the scriptures.
Attentive on a mat in a corner
sitting cross-legged on the floor
Kalo Bhagat was the eleventh person
with moustaches like carded cotton!

Only the Lord knows why this happened
but the wind began to squeal
but the wind began to squeal.
In the heavens thunder resounded
then in a torrent rain poured.
The sky was murky
the river was in flood frenzy!

Lightning flashed and whined and the ears
were blasted by thunder
were blasted by thunder.
Someone’s roof went flying high
someone’s shop was floating
in the nests crows were jabbering
the branches on one another were crashing!

Ka-da-da sounded the detonation
lightning flashed overhead
lightning flashed overhead.
Has it struck or will strike and kill us Lord?
The courageous were mighty perturbed.
All eleven gripped their neighbour
just then the bava lost his temper!

‘Lightning hovers over the sinner
so goes the saying
so goes the saying
Instead of killing all eleven
better that lightning devours one.’
The bava made it very plain
no one though was on it keen!

‘Listen to the words of truth, devotees!
I’ll show you a way
I’ll show you a way.
See in that yard the neem tree?
Let that sinner become the referee.
Go each one and touch the neem –
the sinner will be charred by lightning!

One by one each got up
everyone’s feet were trembling
everyone’s feet were trembling.
Barely touching the neem tree
rushed back to the rest each
with what a sigh of relief
the others embrace he did.

Nine touched the neem
all nine survived
all nine survived.
‘Kalo Bhagat is so old!”
The bava said, ‘ Won’t let him go.’
Neem the bava touched.
The bava too returned!

‘Paint your face black O Kalo!
Shame on your ‘Bhagat’ appellation7!
Shame on your ‘Bhagat’ appellation!
You must be the sinner, last is your turn –
your deeds are like your name!’
Everybody at Kalo swore
but Kalo Bhagat did not care!

Shaking, quaking Bhagat rose
neared he the neem tree
neared he the neem tree.
There was a volley of thunder then
held his breath everyone.
‘Kalo Bhagat is about to go?
The sinner now we certainly know!’

Whining came a bolt of lightning
engulfed the ten
engulfed the ten.
Black like coal the flesh turned
of hands and feet as they burned.
Touching the neem lived Kalo.
Died the ten at Rama’s abode!

Traveler, devotee, if perchance you go
to the banks of Shetrunji
to the banks of Shetrunji
at Rama’s temple at Gambhu’s edge
there a while do wait.
If there you ask some child
it will point to the right shrine!

1 Pluto perhaps was not known when this poem was written. But just as well – Pluto has recently lost its status as a planet!
2 When this poem was written, Gujarat and much of Maharashtra were part of the province of Mumbai.
3 Mercantile community.
4 An old name of Saurashtra.
5 A large evergreen tree.
6 An ascetic.
7 Kalo Bhagat literally means Black Devotee.

Appreciation

I enjoyed the initial cosmic grandiloquence and the descent from the galaxies to a hamlet via the solar system – perhaps this was intended by the poet as a dig at grandiloquence! There is an engaging narrative, as in village folklore. The poem parodies rustic beliefs. The climax is great, and the last line elevates the human above the divine!

About The Author

Krushnalal Shridharani, M.A., M.S., Ph.D. (1911-1960) was born in Umrala in Bhavnagar district of Saurashtra. He had his childhood education in the town of Junagadh and then in the Gandhian school Dakshinamurthy in Bhavnagar, Saurashtra, which used the Montessorie system of teaching. A flunky in examinations in Junagadh (left the math paper blank and wrote a poem in the science paper), he blossomed at Dakshinamurthy. Later he studied in Tagore’s Shantiniketan. Still later he studied in Gujarat Vidyapeeth, a university founded by Gandhiji. He also had exposure to the West in New York, where he studied sociology and political science during the 1930s, the severest years of the Great Depression. He was an ardent nationalist and participated in the famous Dandi March of Mahatma Gandhi. He was arrested and jailed. His doctoral thesis was titled War without Violence, and drew on his experiences in the freedom struggle led by the Mahatma. He worked as a journalist and settled in Delhi. He married a classical dancer from Sindh, now in Pakistan. Shridharani began to write at Dakshinamurthy, and quite copiously. The main source of Shridharani’s imagery was nature. He has written that his boyhood days were filled more by nature than by man. However, he explored a wide range of themes, including Gandhi’s persona, regeneration of society, and the changing nature of India’s political culture after Independence. Besides poems, Shridharani also wrote many songs, including songs for children. There was a 14-year period during which he ceased writing poetry. Shridharani published a volume of poetry during his lifetime. Another volume of Shridharani’s poems was published posthumously. Shridharani also published plays, short stories, children’s poems and plays, and seven books in English, including My India, My America, and a book on the Mahatma. He was a recipient of the Ranjitram Gold Medal.
