ભૂરું છે નભ સ્વચ્છ, સ્વચ્છ દીસતી એકે નથી વાદળી;

રમત કૃષિવલોનાં બાલ નાનાં કરે છે;

ને અશ્વ ઉપર ચડી નર કોઈ આવે;

વૃદ્ધ માતા નયન નબળાં ફેરવીને જુએ છે;

ત્યાં તો આવી પહોંચ્યા એ અશ્વ સાથે યુવાન ત્યાં;
અશ્વથી ઊતરી યુવાન ઊભીને ચારે દિશાએ જુએ;

છૂરી વતી જરીક કાતળી એક કાપી;

“રસહીન ધરા થઈ છે, દયાહીન થયો નૃપ;

આ લોકો સહુ દ્રવ્યવાન નકી છે એવી ધરા છે અહીં;

પ્રભુકૃપાએ નકી એ ભરાશે;

છૂરી વતી જરી જ કાતળી એક કાપી;

The Country Mother (‘Kalapi’ (Sursinhji Takhtasinhji Gohil))

Rises the Hemant1 sun blushing and soft
the sky is clear blue, no clouds in sight;
the cool breeze refreshes and enlivens
and full of verve parrots sing sweet songs.

In a sugarcane field on a morn that is luscious
children of farmers are playing a game
perceiving the rosy cheeks as lotuses
the sun gently caresses them.

An aged couple is warming itself
with the flames of a fire-place.
Oh! How happy seems the pair
created at leisure by the Maker!

Rising at distance is a swirl of dust
and a man approaches on horse-back.
All the children gather together
and gawk at the horse in wonder!

The old lady turns and slowly rises
uses slack hands to shield weak eyes
her beloved husband still calmly sits
scanning while humming and shovels hot coals!

Presently a youthful rider arrives there
saying “Welcome, sir” rises the farmer.
Says the man “Please give some water.”
As he dismounts he looks hither and thither.

“The cane juice is sweet” the mother kindly says
to the sugarcane patch the young man she leads.

The mother stands with a vessel near a cane
slices it but slightly with a sharp blade.
The juice flows freely, the vessel quickly fills
the man drinks up, the while something thinks.

“I am still thirsty, do fill up the vessel once more”
the man hands the vessel again to the mother.
Again and yet again she cuts slivers
but, why, not even a drop oozes!
“Is the Lord angry?” Tearfully she queries
again the knife in the sugarcane she plunges.
“The soil’s essence is gone, or the Ruler’s compassion!
Impossible otherwise” sobs the mother again.
Startled is the young man hearing this
and falls at her feet and rising utters –

“I am the Ruler, please forgive me mother
I am that Ruler, please forgive me Maker!
While I was drinking I had thought, Lord
such fertile soil – these people are so well off.

“I must raise my share – it is yet so small –
why not tax more these well-to-do people?
Now mother fill up the glass with juice
it will certainly now fill with God’s grace.

“Be happy mother! Remain happy all of you.
I only seek blessings from all of you!”
The mother again approaches the cane
cuts just a sliver with the very same blade.

A jet of juice spouts to fill up the vessel,
flowing profusely, overflows the vessel!

Appreciation

This is a quaint 19th century poem of a romantic ruler of a small princely state in Saurashtra, who died tragically at just 26. ‘Kalapi’ fell in love with the maid of his consort. It is said that he was poisoned. I found the poem interesting for several reasons. First, it is a narrative poem with a crisis and a climax, uncommon in Gujarati poetry. Second, it has a bit of magic realism, with the cane being able to sense the ruler’s greed and being able to withhold and release its juice at will. Third is the odd sensibility of the old lady that makes her associate the cane’s behaviour with the ruler’s greed. Fourth reason is the ruler’s change of heart because of the magic enacted before him and the old lady’s wail. And fifth, a ruler excoriates the ruler’s greed, not common at all!

About The Author

‘Kalapi’ (Sursinhji Takhtasinhji Gohil), 5th standard (1874-1900) was born a prince in the small principality of Lathi in Saurashtra. A school dropout because of vision problems, domestic squabbles and political clashes, he nonetheless employed private tutors to study English, Sanskrit, Urdu, and Persian. He became the king at 21 because his father and elder brother passed away. He married thrice, the last with a ‘dasi’ (maid) of one of his queens. This created so much turmoil that he decided to abdicate. He died at 26 under mysterious circumstances, possibly from poisoning. Kalapi read widely, including the works of the Romantic English poets, and interacted with a number of prominent Gujarati poets such as Nanhalal, Kant, and Govardhanram. He was also influenced by Plato and Swedenborg. Some of his most sensitive poems were written during the years of intense emotional turmoil due to his love affair with his wife’s maid. Besides writing lyrics, Kalapi also translated a couple of novels of James Spading. His fairly extensive correspondence with literary friends and others has been posthumously published.
